THE WEIGHT OF ONE DRESS

The passion and extraordinary vision of the legendary Madame Elsa Schiaparelli – Coco Chanel‘s deadly rival – was the basis for some of the most cutting-edge creations that fashion has witnessed.

After 60 years 21 Place de Vendôme is now once more with open doors, the House of Schiaparelli is under the sewing hands of Marco Zanini, finges crossed in the hopes that he is avant-garde enough to be able to fill in the high-heels of the great Schiap!

My favourite design is the candy stripped gown from the Summer of 1939, a dress that chocked (as did most of her creations) the 40’s for its boldness, but that today is recognized as being the baseline inspo for so many other creations, from so many other designers. We have seen Christian Lacroix, in his homage, perfectly capturing Schiap’s surrealistic vibe, and I dare to say, possibly surpassing the master. But other slicker takes such as the ones from Rochas and Dior gave the pink candy stripes a fresh look.

“Dare to be different!” -Schiap
