THE TRIUMPH OF FORM OVER SUBSTANCE

Guggenheim is not only a building, it is The building that has put Bilbao on the map! It is also an architectural masterpiece by Frank Gehry, in a way that challenges your senses as you explore the structure, but it appears that I am not the only one, who considers the building to be the masterpiece of the museum, not just by it’s grandeur but also, and probably mainly, by the lack of it in the works that it shelters.

I am quite glad that they we’re at the time displaying the expo L’art en Guerre. France, 1938–1947: From Picasso to Dubuffet, because otherwise I must say I would be extremely bored by the contents of the iconic box.

The high point of this homage to the pseudo-intellectual is the permanent exposition of Richard Serra’s The Matter of Time, a massive iron breathing sculpture that has to be experienced from within, a maze that oddly blends art and architecture.
